States: Want Even More Welfare Expenses? Ban Birth Control!!

So you've checked out my Presidential Hopefuls post, right? Well now I want to talk about Rick Santorum and his solution to the country's debt... er, wait a second. Rick Santorum wants the states to have the power to ban birth control (among other things, like sodomy - really?). I wouldn't call that a solution to anything.

While I'm sure we can all imagine what will happen if birth control is banned, I'd like to take a moment to think out loud for a bit about it.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, whose strong base of evangelical Christian supporters has thrust him into contention in Iowa, said on Monday that he believes states should have the right to outlaw birth control and sodomy without the interference of the Supreme Court.

“The state has a right to do that, I have never questioned that the state has a right to do that," he said. "It is not a constitutional right. The state has the right to pass whatever statutes they have. That's the thing I have said about the activism of the Supreme Court--they are creating rights, and it should be left up to the people to decide."

Ban birth control and the welfare population will easily double over the next few years.

Ban birth control and the number of abortions will soar.

Ban birth control and the number of unwanted babies will go through the roof.

Ban birth control and .... what else will happen if we allow states to ban birth control? I'm sure there are some things I'm not thinking of.

I understand the thought process behind giving the states more power, and it's a great thing. I'm against big government as much as the next person is, but banning birth control? Really? That shouldn't even be an option. It shouldn't even be discussed. It should be a thought that is so far out there that it is just laughed at, not written about... not talked about... not even considered!

In one way I am thankful for Santorum. It makes my maybe-vote for Obama a little easier to swallow. I wanted to hate Obama, really I did. I didn't like him at first and had no intention of changing my opinion of the President. However, after seeing how he's done over the last few years - and seeing the other options we have - Obama is looking like filet mignon right now compared to the rest of the turkeys.
